Guide to Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

As an extra layer of protection for online banking and our Mobile App, we may require two-factor authentication (2FA) for some logins. This means that you may be asked for a code when you log in, in addition to your User ID and password. You can choose to receive that code via phone call, text, or email. Never share your code with anyone — Patelco will never call or text to ask for it. The only times you'll be asked for a 2FA code is by online banking or our mobile app, never by a person.

For maximum protection, you can also turn on 2FA to be "always on" so you'll be asked for a code every single time you log in to Patelco Online™ and our Mobile App. It takes only a few extra seconds, but will protect your account from automated attacks and fraudsters. A 2019 report from Microsoft concluded that 2FA blocks 99.9%* of automated attacks!

How to turn on 2FA permanently using a desktop computer

  1. Log in to Patelco Online™ from a desktop computer
  2. Select your name in the upper right
  3. Select Settings
  4. Select the Security tab
  5. Next to Two-Factor Authentication, turn the toggle to the ON position (it will appear blue when on)
  6. Make sure you have at least 2 methods enabled: email, SMS and/or voice call (select the pencil icon to edit any of the methods)
  7. You'll see a confirmation at the top of the screen, and will also get an email confirming that you've turned on Two-Factor Authentication

How to turn on 2FA permanently using our Mobile App

  1. Log in to the Mobile App
  2. Select the menu icon (☰) or More
  3. Select Alerts
  4. Select Authentication
  5. Next to Online Banking Access, toggle to the on position (it will appear blue when on)
  6. You'll get an email confirming that you've turned on Two-Factor Authentication

Whether you use online banking or the Mobile App to set 2FA to "always on," it will remain turned on for all future logins, both mobile and desktop.  (You can go back and turn it off later if you want.)

Set up account Alerts

Want to get alerted when your balance is low or when a transaction clears? Set up alerts today in Patelco Online or the Patelco Mobile App.

It’s easy to get started

  1. Log in to Patelco Online™ or the Mobile App
  2. Select MORE, then ALERTS.
    (in Android, select the three bars, then MORE WIDGETS)
  3. Choose the type of alert you’d like to receive. Email, push notifications (available if you have the Mobile App) or text alerts (read below on how set up your mobile number for text message alerts if this option does not appear)
  4. Tap on the alert you want to set up by turning it on, and select SAVE.

Receive Alerts via text message

If you want to get custom Alerts via text message, be sure to verify your mobile number first.

How to verify your mobile number

  1. Log in to Patelco Online™
  2. Select your name in the upper right
  3. Select Settings
  4. Select the Contact tab
  5. Next to Mobile, select Edit
  6. If your mobile number is not confirmed, you’ll see a message to confirm it
  7. Make sure that the box is checked next to "I would like to receive SMS text messages to this number" (to confirm your number, select Send a code via text)
  8. Follow the on-screen instructions, and then enter your code
  9. After entering your code, select Verify
  10. You'll receive a second code — enter that code in the box
  11. Select Confirm Code
  12. Select Save Changes

Once your mobile number is confirmed, you can opt in to text message Alerts about your accounts. Select your name (or the down arrow) in the upper right, then select Settings, and then choose the Notifications tab.

Create nicknames for your accounts

Personalizing your account names in online banking makes it easier to manage your money at a glance. With nicknames, you can stay on top of your spending and saving better, and clearly identify the purpose of each account.

For example, if you have two savings accounts with Patelco and one is for your children’s college tuition, you may want to rename that account “College Fund.” This will help you quickly locate the account in the future and encourage you to save as part of your own personal budget.

Here’s how to nickname your accounts in online banking:

  1. Sign in to Patelco Online™ using a desktop computer
  2. Select the ACCOUNTS widget
  3. Tap or click on the specific account you want to rename
  4. Towards the righthand side of the page at the top, you’ll see the name of the account with a small pencil icon next to it
  5. Tap or click on the pencil icon
  6. Type the new name for the account in the Nickname field (name it whatever you’d like with a maximum of 25 characters)
  7. If you want, you can also change the color that’s displayed next to the account
  8. Select the Save button

The next time you view your account online, the nickname will appear.

Save time and paper with eStatements

Go a little greener with electronic statements, which you can access conveniently - and which provide added protection against mail theft. We'll email you each month to let you know when your statement is ready to view. 

Getting started with eStatements (for new members)

  1. Log in to Patelco Online™
  2. Select the ACCOUNTS widget after logging in to online banking
  3. Select the Statements tab
  4. Select the Register tab
  5. Read and accept by selecting the Register button
  6. Confirm your name and provide your email address
  7. Choose which statements to receive electronically (you can select all of them even if you don't have that type of account)
  8. Select Next
  9. Accept the disclosures (if any)
  10. Once you see the confirmation screen, you're done

To view statements online, log in to Patelco Online™, select the ACCOUNTS widget, and then select the Statements tab. (You don't need to be signed up for eStatements to view your statements online.)

Getting started with eStatements (for existing members)

  1. Log in to Patelco Online™
  2. Select the ACCOUNTS widget after logging in to online banking
  3. Select the Statements tab
  4. Select Settings
  5. Choose whether you prefer eStatements or Paper for each type of account
  6. Select the Submit button when you're done

To view statements online, log in to Patelco Online™, select the ACCOUNTS widget, and then select the Statements tab. (You don't need to be signed up for eStatements to view your statements online.) You can view up to 5 years of statement history. If you need a statement older than 5 years, send us a secure message using the MESSAGE CENTER widget.

Take advantage of Courtesy Pay

Take advantage of this debit card service and shop worry-free.

If you opt in through Patelco Online™, we may authorize debit card purchases (except PIN-based transactions) even if you don't have sufficient funds to cover the transaction.

For each paid overdraft transaction, we'll charge a $28 fee, unless you make a deposit to cover the negative amount of your account by the end of the same business day. (If the overdraft brings your account negative by $25 or less, we may also waive the fee.)

Once you're overdrawn on your account, you'll also be responsible for any other penalties or fees. Please refer to your Patelco Member Handbook for program details.

Say goodbye to fees and overdrawn accounts with Overdraft Protection

Here's how it works: we'll transfer money from your chosen backup account(s) to your checking account if there isn't enough money to cover a check, debit card purchase, or electronic transaction. It's a great way to avoid overdrawn accounts, overdraft charges and late fees. You can designate up to 8 backup accounts, and add or remove them easily.

Deposit checks anytime, anywhere with Anywhere Deposit

Anywhere Deposit lets you to deposit checks directly into your account using Patelco Online™ or the Mobile App.

To use Anywhere Deposit, you must:

  • Meet credit requirements
  • Have our Mobile App on your iPhone or Android device, or be logged in to online banking
  • Be registered for Patelco Online™

To use Anywhere Deposit, select the ANYWHERE DEPOSIT widget in Patelco Online™ (you may need to select the MORE… widget first), or select the check deposit icon inside our Mobile App.
