Make your medical wishes known.
As a competent adult, you have the right to decide whether you want to accept or refuse any medical treatment. But someday you may become too sick to make your own decisions about your care.
A living will takes care of that. It's an advance directive that gives directions to health care providers about treatment choices should you become terminally ill or incapacitated. It allows you to state your feelings clearly so that your family and provider knows how to proceed.
Take the time today to think about your wishes in advance, discuss your options with your family, friends, and health care professionals, and make plans for your future health care needs.
You can learn more about living wills through our free seminar, The Truth About Estate Planning and Living Trusts (click and scroll down to find seminar). Or, visit Nolo Press for information and other resources.
If you're a California resident, you can find more information about living wills through the Advance Health Care Directive. For all other states, talk to your doctor, lawyer, or state representative. |
