No matter if you plan to hire a professional to complete your federal tax form or go it alone, a little organization can help make tax time efficient and easy (or at least easier!). To get started – preferably well in advance of the April 15 tax filing date – you’ll need to gather the following:

• One of three tax forms (1040EZ, 1040A or 1040), depending on your income and deductions.
• Your Social Security number (and that of your spouse and dependents, if applicable).
• W-2 forms from all your employers during 2007.
• 1099 forms for dividends, interest, retirement distributions, etc.
• Receipts for deductible expenses, which may include medical and dental expenses; state, local and property taxes; certain interest payments; home mortgage points; casualty and theft losses; educational expenses; charitable contributions; business use of car or home; and other business or miscellaneous expenses.*
• Records and receipts for other income and expenses.
• Credit union account and routing numbers.
